Surgical Scrub Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Works in collaboration with the surgical team to ensure the patient’s well being and to prepare instruments, equipment, supplies and the environment of the OR in the delivery of surgical care of the patient.
JOB DUTIES:
Patient Care Activity
The Scrub Technician (ST) prepares the O.R. environment and technical aspects required for surgical intervention.
The Registered Nurse / ST (or both) plan the technical equipment needed for surgical intervention for patients.
Implements technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervenes with established techniques, procedures and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patients and maintain sterile technique.
Implements technical plan through preparation of instruments and equipment and passing instruments and checking safety procedures for equipment at the sterile field.
Functions within the limits of State Regulations, hospital, and nursing department policies and procedures.
Assists in maintaining current information for physician preference cards records.
Pick cases appropriately according to physician preference.
Set up rooms, including OR bed, tables and other equipment confirming sterility assurance where needed.
Using aseptic techniques opening sterile instruments/items and setting up the cases.
Maintains aseptic techniques throughout the procedure and assists in surveillance of other sterile personnel. Initiates corrective action when sterility is broken.
Anticipation of surgeon’s needs throughout the case by having a working knowledge of the procedure.
Working knowledge of equipment and instrumentation.
ST not participating in the sterile portion of surgery will assist in positioning and transferring the patient. Assists in use of proper positioning equipment.
Maintain a safe zone for handing off sharps from sterile field.
Maintains and follows OSHA regulations regarding sharps, blood and bodily fluids and infection control practices. Wears appropriate PPE.
Maintains correct sponge, sharps, instruments and medication counts.
Proper care of instrumentation in preparation for decontamination.
Proper disposal of Biohazard wastes and sharps.
Proper care and handling of instrumentation.
Surgical Tech is responsible for not inadvertently disposing of reusable instruments.
Maintains and protects patient’s privacy and dignity before, during and after the procedure.
Transports and maintains equipment in accordance to hospital policy and industrial standards.
Maintains knowledge of: Decontamination and Central Sterile Processing, Inspection, and appropriate processing methods for al equipment and instrumentation across all services (including but not limited to: Urology, Ortho, General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Podiatry, Genecology/OB, and Endoscopy).
Understands working elements of instruments and equipment, and is able to troubleshoot problem.
Performs clinical preceptor role of his/her specialty service.
Saves and correctly identifies all specimens according to department policy and procedure.
Handling Medications
The ST will properly and aseptically draw up appropriate medications from RN and then label accordingly, and communicate to surgeon contents of syringes on sterile field.
Other Activities Related to Patient Care
Informs RN or Director of Surgical Services regarding status of equipment functionality and level of supplies needed to order
Maintains interpersonal relationships with fellow workers and ancillary hospital personnel
Keeps patient information confidential and respects patients’ right to privacy
Assists in maintaining clean, safe environment for patients and co-workers.
Transports patients and runs errands as required.
Assists and performs unit assignments as required.
Participates in and attends in-service programs to maintain high level of technical knowledge and skills.
Performs other related duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an approved, certified surgical scrub technical program
Basic computer skills
Must be able to take “call time” during the week and weekends
